Kids Wildlife Craft : DIY Bee Hotel
Solitary bees are amazing little garden helpers. Unlike honeybees, many solitary bees live alone and look for small safe spaces to rest and nest. This easy recycled craft turns an old baked bean tin into a cosy bee hotel using simple paper or cardboard tubes.
It’s fun, easy, and helps wildlife too!
What You’ll Need
- An empty baked bean tin
- Thick paper, paper straws, or cardboard tubes
- Scissors
- String or garden twine
- Sandpaper
- Glue or sticky tape
- Paint, stickers, or pens for decorating
- An adult helper
Safety First
Ask an adult to help when cutting materials or checking the tin for sharp edges. Make sure the tin is clean and dry before you begin.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Clean the tin
Wash and dry your baked bean tin carefully.
2. Check the edges
Ask an adult to check there are no sharp edges. Use sandpaper if needed.
3. Make your tubes
Roll strips of paper or thin card into tubes about the same length as the tin.
4. Fill the tin
Pack the tubes tightly inside the tin so they stay snug and do not fall out.
5. Decorate your bee hotel
Paint the outside or add stickers to make your bee hotel bright and colourful.
6. Add hanging string
Tie strong string or twine around the tin securely.
7. Hang it up!
Place your bee hotel somewhere sunny and dry in the garden.
Bee Tips
- Solitary bees are usually very gentle.
- Bees help flowers, fruit, and vegetables grow.
- Hang your bee hotel facing south or east if possible.
- Try not to move it once it’s hanging up.
- Be patient! Tiny visitors may take time to move in.
Did You Know?
Most bees in the UK are solitary bees, not hive bees!
